The Power of The Heart
The power of the heart is the power of life itself, the power to be connected with who we are at the deepest level. We work with breath and heart connection, with intention and attention, to harness energy, purpose and qualities that support people with accessing their wonderful heart qualities and help them fully understand what’s important to them.
Accessing Your Heart Qualities
We are all blessed with wonderful heart qualities within us, we can awaken these heart qualities, focus these qualities on supporting changes and shifts we wish to see in our personal lives, working lives and in the world. Accessing these heart qualities when we need them takes practice, that’s where we can help.
We work with breath and heart connection so we can be more heart-centered, helping us be more open and understanding of others, more insightful and purposeful. This can help transform our health, relationships, and achievements, it can help us have the confidence that we can have a greater effect on our world than our world has upon us.

Why We Work With The Heart
For hundreds of years people have spoken about the Power of the Heart in everyday phrases – a big heart, a heart of gold, follow your heart, learning something by heart, cross my heart, didn’t have the heart, take heart, open heart – but to name a few. These sayings begin to demonstrate the historical impact the heart has. For many hundreds of years people in different cultures all around the world have seen the heart having a form of guidance, a form of intelligence. For example in Chinese medicine, a heart is ‘the seat of connection between the mind and the body.’ In your yogic traditions, the heart is both literally and figuratively seen as the internal guide. In Japanese there are 2 words to describe the heart: shinzu – the physical organ; and kokomo – the ‘mind of the heart’.
There is good reason why there are so many powerful references to the heart. We breakdown these Powers of the Heart into the following 3 key areas:
Transforming Power of the Heart
Healing Power of the Heart
Intuitive Power of the Heart
Transforming Power of the Heart
Focusing on your heart (and in particular your heartbeat) will expand your concept of who you are and broaden the scope of your self-awareness and awareness of life around you. You can practice this at home, out walking, at work, when travelling, with practice others will be able to see the effects (without knowing the cause).
We have a choice to understand our mission, our meaning, our purpose in life – whether we decide to take this on or not, we can benefit from greater self awareness – from this self awareness comes greater choice of our actions and how we live our lives. Why do we feel the way we do? What is the relationship between our attitude and life’s events? Where is the limit of our influence and vision? If you share this aspiration of self-knowledge, you can use your heart connection (through attention on your breath and heart beat/pulse) to probe your inner powers, your authenticity, your true potential as a human being – physically, emotionally, mentally and your connection to your essence.
Heart connection can help turn challenges into opportunities for growth and connect with being more purposeful. When we become aware that challenges are a part of our unfolding of ourselves and our essence, that they are part of life, that they are part of our self development, we approach them differently. When we can view difficulty as a test, which will only strengthen our being, we in time discover that, although the setback was inevitable and you did not expect or deserve it, it did contribute to our growth.
When we connect with our hearts we connect to possibility and guidance to answer the question: What does life want from me?
Healing Power of the Heart
Some of our health depends on circulation and rhythm, both of which are supplied by the heart. The body’s rhythm comes from the heartbeat, which is felt by every cell through the physical surge of pressure in the pulse, and instantaneously through the heart’s magnetic pulse. It is the signal of the heartbeat that coordinates the activities of all organs, including the brain; the heart controls the body by calculating this signal.
Awareness of our heartbeat will physically strengthen our heart and stabilise its rhythm, in turn this helps to calm the nervous system – this can lead to a sense of greater stillness and inner peace; provide a source of greater resilience; the rhythm can open your circulatory system; and the full-breath pattern will create much greater oxygenation of your bloodstream.
Intuitive Power of the Heart
The heart can provide access to “aha!” thoughts and greater insight. These are by-products of linking the conscious and unconscious mind through focusing on your heart. Once the door to your inner consciousness is opened, inspiration and insights can flow more freely.
The practice of listening to your heartbeat and managing your breath rhythm will make you conscious of one of the key functions of your unconscious mind, and that will bring about a working connection between your conscious and unconscious resources. When you become aware of your heartbeat and your breath, you will directly witness a behaviour of your unconscious.
Your unconscious mind is used to directing your heart to beat and your breathing pattern. Through heartfulness practices we focus our conscious mind to the function of our breathing which frees up the capacity of the unconscious mind to consider other things. Through this portal you can glimpse the power of your vast unconscious and begin to harness the insight and intuition to benefit other parts of your life such as relationships, health, accomplishments and your purpose.
Our Heart Beat
Our heart beats about 100,000 times every day, pumping blood to every cell in our bodies. This adds up to about 35 million beats a year and 2.5 billion beats in an average lifetime.
Medical science tells us that every contraction is similar to the effort it would take for us to hold a tennis ball in our palm and give it a good hard squeeze.
